About Us
The Center for Genetics in Health and Medicine (CGHM) was established to provide a comprehensive, academic environment for the integration of modern genetics research with associated clinical and public health activities.
The mission of the Center is to enrich genetics research at the University of Michigan by fostering the development of an interactive intellectual community of faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students in the basic and clinical sciences and supporting the development of new research opportunities, including those with translational potential.
The CGHM will accomplish its mission by:
1. Enhancing scientific interaction among existing research programs in human genetics across the Medical School and University
We plan to promote the interaction of faculty and integration of research programs in human genetics at the University of Michigan by working together with other units to host symposia that feature the power of genetics research applied to specific areas of human health.
2. Supporting enhanced training programs in genetics
We plan to develop new interdisciplinary genetics training programs for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and medical genetics fellows in both the basic sciences and clinical specialties to enhance and complement existing training programs in human genetics.
3. Establishing and enhancing core support services
The CGHM plans to develop new core services and enhance existing resources that will support genetic research, foster new programs, and stimulate the clinical translation of genetic research discoveries.
4. Developing new research programs in genetic disease
The CGHM will work collaboratively with clinical department chairs to recruit new junior faculty jointly as core members of the CGHM, with appointments in any Medical School department and joint appointments in the Department of Human Genetics.
